Developing more control of your breath takes more consciousness than you might think.  Not only do you need to learn how to distinguish between the stress breath and the relaxation practice, you also need to practice enough to rely on it in key moments.    

Implementation

  • Practice the Basic Breath breathing technique for 21 days, 3 to 5 times per day keeping this exercise well-recorded in your mind and body.

  • Start with the recording and then eventually you will be familiar enough to practice without as much guidance.  You can always come back to the audio to refresh the technique.   

  • Create daily reminders or prompts to practice. Add an alarm to your phone, sticky notes around your house on the fridge, bathroom mirror etc..

  • Practice regularly in or outside your sport or performance setting

  • Start incorporating the breath into training sessions before, during or after Build it purposefully into a pre-competition routine

  • Practice it as a “proactive technique” cultivating more overall calming ability

  • Use it anytime you are feeling increased levels of stress
